As Children’s Freedom Has Declined, So Has Their Creativity.  New research suggests that American schoolchildren are becoming less creative.

If anything makes Americans stand tall internationally it is creativityAmerican ingenuity” is admired everywhere. . We are the most inventive country.

According to Kim’s research, who is a professor of education at the College of William and Mary,  all aspects of creativity in the U.S. have declined, but the biggest decline is in the measure called Creative Elaboration, which assesses the ability to take a particular idea and expand on it in an interesting and novel way.

Creativity is nurtured by freedom and stifled by the continuous monitoring, evaluation, adult-direction, and pressure to conform that restrict children’s lives today. In the real world few questions have one right answer, few problems have one right solution; that’s why creativity is crucial to success in the real world.

Odyssey of the Mind program for students encourages such creativity and elaboration. Start a program at your child’s school today.

Pins and Needles Micro Art by Willard Wiggins

This artwork is so small it can only be seen with high powered microscopes!  Wiggins artwork is something we got to view at Odyssey of the Mind World Finals in 2011 at the University of Maryland. What an appropriate place to share his artwork – at a creative problem solving competition.  It is so amazing! Talk about creative, innovative, and thinking outside the box!!! http://artstormer.com/2011/02/08/pins-and-needles-micro-art-by-willard-wigan/Image
